Chatham University associate professor to receive Distinguished Educator Award from the American Physical Therapy Association
Dr. Susan Perry
Dr. Susan Perry, a Chatham University associate professor of physical therapy, will receive the Distinguished Educator Award from the Education Section of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). This national award, recognizes a physical therapy educator who has distinguished herself or himself through excellence in academic or clinical education at the national, regional, or local level, in addition to distinguishing herself or himself in a subject matter area as evidenced by publications or other appropriate demonstrations. The award will be presented to Dr. Perry at the APTA meeting in Chicago on February 10.
A physical therapy clinician for nearly 30 years and an educator/clinician for 20, Dr. Perry has been certified as a clinical specialist in neurological physical therapy for 18 years. She belongs to both the Education and Neurology Sections of the American Physical Therapy Association.
As curriculum coordinator for Chatham's physical therapy program, Dr. Perry mentors new and existing faculty and integrates the curriculum in a way that builds from basic to complex knowledge. She also trains faculty in problem-based learning facilitation, which makes up approximately 50 percent of the curriculum.
Dr. Perry has been actively engaged in service to the physical therapy profession, with an emphasis on practice and education. Recently, she has served as vice president of the APTA Neurology Section (2006-present) and co-chair of the Education Committee for the Southwest District of the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association (2004-2006).
A researcher in neurologic rehabilitation and fall/fracture prevention, Dr. Perry has had multiple publications and presentations at the national level. In addition, she is a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy (formerly Neuro Report) and Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She has served on the Bottom Line Committee for Physical Therapy, and has published multiple annotations in the journal throughout the past several years.
Dr. Perry received her BS in physical therapy from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, her Advanced Master of Science Degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Chatham College.
About the Physical Therapy Program
As an integral part of Chatham University, the physical therapy program educates doctors of physical therapy who will advance the quality of human life through excellence in clinical practice. The program educates practitioners who will meet the challenges of a dynamic health care environment and supports scholarly activity that bridges science and clinical practice.
