Scholarships Available for Study Abroad

Chatham University is pleased to offer competitive funds to support students who wish to study abroad. Students may apply for funding from the initiatives listed below. Click here for the Application for Study Abroad Scholarships.  The amounts listed are for the 2010-2011 Academic Year and are subject to change.

Application Deadlines

The Benter Initiative for Global Citizenship. - $2,000

The goal of this initiative is to bring Chatham students into closer contact with the Muslim world in order to foster relationships and develop a deeper understanding of Muslim cultures in the Middle East. Awards of $2,000 are available to students who intend to study language and culture at a predominantly Muslim location in the Middle East. Additional funding may be available, depending on a student's demonstrated financial need. Students intending to study abroad for a minimum of one term may apply. Summer may be considered a term if the program length is at least 12 weeks.

Institute for Study Abroad Foundation (IFSA) Funds. - $4,000-$8,000

Funding is available from the Institute for Study Abroad and Chatham University for students who wish to study in developing countries. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in and agree to complete one of Chatham's International Studies Certificate Programs. Awards of $4,000 are available to students who wish to study for a term abroad (Fall, Spring, or Summer). Awards of $8,000 are available for students who wish to study for a year abroad. Students intending to study abroad for a minimum of one term may apply. Summer may be considered a term if the program length is at least 12 weeks.

Vira I. Heinz Scholarship Program for Women in Global Leadership - $5,000 +

This award is granted to three Chatham students at the during the first semester of the sophomore year. It is intended to develop cross-cultural competency with a focus on international leadership. This is accomplished through international travel during the summer of before their junior year, and through leadership development workshops held prior to departure and after the study abroad experience. The student will then take their cultural knowledge and apply it to a community engagement experience during their junior year. Please note: this award is a major 3-year commitment on the part of the student. It is intended for those students wishing to further their skills in leadership and international relations. The Glenda Rich DeBroff '60 Memorial Scholarship Fund - $965

This award is granted to a full-time Chatham student who is in good standing and has financial need. The award is intended to enrich the student's academic program as approved by the University and to provide opportunity for study and/or travel during Maymester.

The Sally Mercke Heym '63 Memorial Award for Cross Cultural Understanding - $2,200

This award is granted to a full-time sophomore or junior student with a GPA of 3.0. The award is intended to enrich the student's academic program as approved by the University, to provide opportunity for study and travel in a foreign country during summer study abroad, and through this experience, help to enhance international understanding and awareness on campus.

The Lorin Maazel-Rachel Carson Scholarship Award for Environmental Field Studies - $3,400

This award is granted to a Chatham student with a GPA of 3.0 or above for a summer field study/internship at the close of her sophomore or junior year. It is intended to enrich the student's academic program through environmental fieldwork during summer study abroad.

The Theo Colborn-Rachel Carson Endowed Scholarship Award for Environmental Field Studies - $1,100

This award is granted to a Chatham student with a GPA of 3.0 or above for summer field study at the close of her sophomore or junior year. It is intended to enrich the student's academic program through environmental fieldwork during summer study abroad.

The Barbara Stone Hollander '60 Student Leadership Award - $2,500

This award is granted to a Chatham student for a hands-on practical experience in leadership development. The experience is to be related to a program outside the academic track in the areas of government internships, community involvement or like programs, and should bring positive visibility to the University. This award is granted each year. An event is held every other year. The next one will be held in spring 2011.
