And the S-STEM scholarship program at Chatham is helping create them.
Chatham University is participating in an exciting and lucrative scholarship grant program from the National Science Foundation open to undergraduate women majoring in biology, chemistry, and biochemistry.
Chatham + S-STEM = Up to $30,000 of financial help per year
In addition to any other merit aid or financial help, each eligible student will receive a scholarship of up to $10,000 per year for four years of study. And because almost 98% of Chatham students receive financial aid, this combination means that an S-STEM student can significantly reduce her financial contribution - receiving a world-class Chatham education for just hundreds of dollars out-of-pocket each year.
This scholarship grant from the National Science Foundation will provide a limited number of competitive scholarships to academically talented female undergraduate students who decide to major in these three areas. The purpose of these scholarships is to assist academically talented, financially in-need students.
- Must be a first-time female undergraduate student accepted at Chatham
- Must be enrolled full-time (registered for a minimum of 12 credits each semester)
- Must major in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry
- Must plan a career in basic or applied science (not medical or health related)
- May not participate in the Chatham Scholar program
- Must be a U.S. citizen, refugee alien, or permanent resident alien
- Must demonstrate financial need defined for undergraduate students by the U.S. Department of Education's rules for need-based federal financial aid

Why you should choose Chatham for science
Because of our small class sizes, every student at Chatham experiences personalized attention and flexibility. This means you get to know your professors and can choose other liberal arts subjects to coincide with your major such as combining biology with art.
You'll also get hands-on experience with research equipment and can see how your reading and lectures relate to what's going on in research. You'll be able to do your investigations with a faculty member, not just other students.

The academic components of the S-STEM grant program are based on a strong foundation of academic rigor.
In addition to their regular academic courses, students enroll in six cohort courses over first three years, four of which are taken together as a part of the first-year experience. The cohorts of approximately 10 students per year are strengthened through extracurricular experiences that span the students' time at Chatham.
Another of the distinctive aspects of undergraduate education at Chatham is that all students are required to complete a tutorial research project as part of their curriculum. For this specific program, each student prepares a research proposal in the junior year and executes a research project during the senior year, which culminates in a written thesis and defense. Students are mentored by a faculty member, who along with two additional faculty members comprise their tutorial board. These boards evaluates the feasibility of their research projects in their infancies and the completeness of their work at their project defenses. Many of the tutorial projects result in peer-reviewed publications for faculty and student teams.
Get a jump start on grad school or a career
In this program, scholars will also have access to Chatham's Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) to strengthen student-faculty research projects. Since 2001, the science department has conducted SURP, using funds from NSF research grants, University sources, and private foundations. Many of Chatham's science majors apply for SURP or Research Experiences for Undergraduates programs (REU) at other institutions where they are interested in attending graduate school.
These experiences help them obtain hands-on training before applying for graduate school. Due to limited funding, there are often more students than there are opportunities available through the SURP or REU program. As part of the S-STEM grant program, a Maymester course (a three-week May term included in the spring term tuition) designed to enhance the research experience for scholarship awardees will expand Chatham's ability to meet the student demand for high quality research opportunities and help deepen the collaborative relationships between students, their advisors, and mentors.
