Crew Club
The Chatham University Crew club is a student initiated activity currently comprised of undergraduate and graduate students both with and without previous rowing experience. The wide variety of participants creates a great group dynamic quite different from most other sports and clubs on Chatham’s campus. Participation is open to anyone who enjoys a challenge and wishes to become a part of a remarkable team while developing life long friendships.
Rowers practice in the mornings during the fall semester on the Allegheny River at Steel City Rowing Club in Verona. The team is coached by Steel City Rowing Club co-founder Dori Tompa. In addition to eight national titles Dori is an indoor rowing world champion and five time U.S. National Champion. She is certified as a Level III coach and has coached juniors and adults to gold medal finishes at the Head of the Ohio, Head of the Schuyllkill, Head of the Charles, U.S. Nationals, and the Youth Invitational.
Coach Ladislau Tompa is the other head coach and co-founder of Steel City Rowing Club. Laci is a three-time European Champion and seven-time Romanian National Champion with vast experience in rowing technique and training methods. The U.S. Rowing Associatino has certified him as a Level III Coach, the highest level attainable. Laci has eighteen years of rowing and coaching experience and has successfully led teams to the U.S. Olympic Trials and U.S. World Trials. He has also coached many Steel City teams that represented the U.S. at the World Rowing Championships.
