Dorm v. Residence Hall
the power of language
Categories : Residence Life
A lot of people come to campus calling our residence areas 'dorms' and in fact in many places, the term dorm and residence hall are used interchagably.
I wanted to give a little history, and let you know that Chatham does not have dorms - we have residence halls. Even our apartment areas are considered apartment style residence halls.
So, what's the difference?
A residence hall is a rich community intentionally designed from physical structure to the offering of activities to the placement of residence hall staff to create opportunities for personal and educational growth.
A dorm may just be a place to hang your hat, but our residence halls are so much more than that!! You expect more from us than just to provide a bed, so we expect more from you than to just sleep in it. Our residence halls have rich opportunity for you to contribute and benefit from the community; take advantage!

Now I know the difference between a dorm and a residence hall. Before I thought both were alike. Many people who have never lived on the university or close by do not know the distinction. Thanks for the clarification.
