All those parking on campus must apply for and obtain and display a valid parking permit or valid visitor pass throughout the year. All Chatham University community members are eligible for permits. Note: There are a limited number of permits issued for Eastside campus.
Permit Application Procedure
All community members who are eligible to purchase a parking permit must complete an online parking permit application. When you submit the application, it is emailed to Public Safety. Permits are non-refundable after the add/drop period of each term.
In the spring, students will receive an email indicating when permits will be available for purchase. In the summer, the permits will be mailed to the address indicated on your parking permit application. Student’s permits are automatically billed to Student Accounts.
For Faculty and Staff:
In the summer, Faculty and Staff will receive an email indicating when permits will be available for purchase. Permits will be mailed by interoffice mail to the location listed on your parking permit application. All Faculty (including Adjunct Faculty) and Staff permits are automatically billed to Payroll Deduction.
You may only use a permit on a vehicle registered in your name or a family member’s name. Community Members are not permitted to “share” a permit.

Alternative Parking and Transportation
Port Authority of Allegheny County (PAT) Transit
Chatham University has entered into an agreement with the Port Authority of Allegheny County (PAT), to provide community members with free transportation on the PAT System. Community members need only display their Chatham I.D. card to board any PAT bus, light rail vehicle or the Monongahela Incline as payment for unlimited rides throughout the service area. PAT makes nearly all areas of Allegheny County accessible to Chatham students, faculty, and staff.
While permits must be purchased by individual community members, we encourage commuters to share rides with a permit holder to reduce campus traffic and facilitate smoother commutes.
Visitor Parking Passes
Visitors to the campus are required to obtain and display a visitor parking pass except for parking in the designated two hour visitor parking spaces. Visitor passes are not required for vehicles parking on campus between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Monday through Friday and all day on weekends and Holidays. Visitor passes cannot be used at the apartments on 5th Avenue and where restricted by sign and in accordance with posted time limits. All community members are responsible for advising their visitors of this policy. Visitor passes are issued through the Public Safety Department, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Visitors to Student Services may obtain a visitor pass from the Student Services staff. Prospective students may obtain a visitor pass from the Admissions Office in Berry Hall. Visitor passes are only issued to visitors of the University and are nontransferable. Each visitor is limited to two visitor passes per semester.
Disabled Parking Permits
Disabled license plates or placards must be displayed at all times on vehicles parked in disabled spaces.
All persons who park in disabled areas and do not display the appropriate license plate or placard will be issued a citation. Community members with a parking permit who obtain a letter from their physician outlining the need for temporary disabled parking, including start and end dates, are eligible to receive a temporary disabled permit from the Public Safety Department for up to 90 days. Requests for longer than 90 days will require application for a state-issued disabled permit.
Parking is prohibited as follows:
- In fire lanes
- On walkways
- Blocking entrances, exits, driveways or loading docks
- Double parking (except as directed by parking attendant)
- In areas restricted by posted signs
- In visitor areas (without valid visitor parking pass)
- Improper parking (out of lines)
- Obstructing traffic
- Two hour visitor areas (beyond two hour and/or community members)
The Public Safety Department has authority to enforce parking regulations on campus. Chatham University is private property, and the department is governed by Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code, Title 75, Section 3353, Subsection (b) (2).
Chatham University parking policies and procedures are enforced year round. All persons parking on Chatham University campus properties must have and properly display a valid parking permit or visitor pass. Community members are responsible for checking the areas in which they park to verify that their permit entitles them to park legally in that area (i.e. a 5th Ave (“5”) sticker is required to park in the apartment lots along 5th Avenue).
Parking on the Chatham University campuses Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. requires a valid parking permit or visitor pass in the following lots: Library/Theater, Buhl Terrace, Chapel Hill (Faculty/Staff only), East Lots, Berry, Beatty Drive, Fickes, and Eastside. A valid parking permit with appropriate sticker is required at all times to park at the apartments along 5th Avenue. During Interim and Summer terms, some lots on campus may be designated for “open parking" (no permit required). Specific information regarding “open parking" will be provided via campus email memo prior to the start of these terms.
All vehicles on the campus are subject to the rules set forth in this document. Penalties for violations may result in fines, towing, and/or revocation of parking privileges. Community members, who fail to pay outstanding parking fines after ten (10) days entitles Chatham University to deduct applicable amounts from paychecks, apply to student accounts, and/or have said vehicle towed at owner's expense. Falsification of a parking permit application, misrepresenting eligibility, or alteration of a parking permit in any way will result in criminal or judicial charges. The parking permit is only valid when conducting Chatham University business. Chatham University parking citations should be paid by check or money order made payable to “Chatham University.”
Parking offenders are subject to the following measures:
- Vehicles displaying a current Chatham University parking permit – issuance of Chatham citation(s) – fines vary depending on violation
- All other vehicles – issuance of State citation(s) – fines vary depending on violation
Habitual violators, vehicles blocking other vehicles, vehicles parked in a hazardous manner, vehicles impeding the flow of traffic, and/or abandon vehicles will be subject to the issuance of a State citation and the vehicle towed at the owner's expense.
Any individual who is issued a Chatham University citation may appeal the citation through the Public Safety Department. The appeal must be filed by the person who received the citation. The completed appeal form with the citation attached must be submitted within ten (10) days of the citation's issuance. Failure to appeal the citation within the allotted time will result in automatic denial of the appeal.
The Director of Public Safety reviews each filed appeal. If the appeal is granted, the appealant is notified and needs to take no further action. If the appeal is denied, the appealant is notified via email and must pay the fine within ten (10) days of the notification. Payment must be made by check or money order made payable to “Chatham University.” Cash is not accepted. If the fine is not paid ten (10) after the denial notification, the fine will be deducted from an employee’s paycheck or applied to a student’s account.
In the event of inclement weather and the accumulation of snow or ice, the snow/ice must be removed from campus parking lots. Public Safety officers will direct community members into cleared lots. Any vehicle that obstructs snow/ice removal will be towed.
- This free service is provided by Chatham University for the safety of students, faculty and staff. There is one shuttle that runs from Chatham’s main campus to Chatham’s Eastside campus, and one shuttle that runs from Chatham’s main campus to Oakland.
- The shuttle to the Eastside Campus runs Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 11 PM. The shuttle to the Oakland runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, and on Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The Oakland shuttle also operates on Sundays from 10 AM to 6 PM.

- Chatham University through the University of Pittsburgh provides a van service called Safe Rider which is available during the evening and early morning hours to transport students from one campus to another, from local residences to campus buildings, and from campus buildings to local residences.
- Safe Rider operates from Sunday through Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Summer hours are Sunday through Saturday 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

- The dispatcher may advise you to use the campus shuttle for some trips.
- Safe Rider will not stop at the Chatham Apartments until after 12:00 a.m.
