Clinical Preceptor Selection Criteria
All students enrolled in NUR 404 Community and Environmental Health, NUR 408 Nursing with Underserved Populations, or NUR 499 Contemporary Nursing Practice need clinical site and preceptor approval prior to beginning the clinical. You must do this no later than 2 weeks prior to the start of the session you are taking the course.
Below you will find the “Preceptor Selection Criteria” which needs to be considered while choosing your clinical preceptor.
All clinical students need to contact Dr. Carol Patton, Chair of the Nursing Department, once they have enrolled in a clinical course in order to confirm that they are prepared to enter into a clinical situation. Students not following these processes will not be allowed to continue with clinical courses once the session begins. There will not be any exceptions.
Email Dr. Patton at cpatton@chatham.edu:
- A proposal (1 or 2 paragraphs) defining your practicum plan.
- A list of 3 learning goals.
- The timeline for starting and finishing your clinical experience.
- A copy of your preceptor’s CV. (Dr. Patton needs to review to approve your preceptor)
- A copy of your preceptor’s License.
- Please note, if an agency agreement is required this can take 3-6 months so you need to consider this in your decision making.
Once these materials are received, they will be reviewed and approved. Then a three-way pre-clinical conference call will be scheduled with the preceptor, student, and Dr. Patton. You may not log clinical hours until all steps in the process are completed. You must allow 24-48 hours to schedule the pre- and post-conference call.
Upon completion of clinical hours, a post-conference must be held with the preceptor, student, and Dr. Patton. A Clinical course requires you meet all these requirements in order to get a course grade. A clinical failure will result in course failure and a need to repeat both the theory and clinical portions of the class.
Dr. Patton may be reached by phone at (412) 365-2726. If you have any questions or concerns, please let her know.
Receipt of this information is critical to your success. Please notify Pat Markham that you have received and understand this information. Her contact information is pmarkham@chatham.edu or (412) 365-2926.
