UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing Entrance Exam Preparation Course: Science and Math
UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing utilizes the PSB Nursing School Aptitude Examination (RN) as a tool to measure your readiness for success in nursing school. In order to initiate an advantageous start to your nursing school experience, the College for Continuing and Professional Studies at Chatham University, in collaboration with UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing, has prepared a course equipped to help you improve your pass rate in the math and natural science subject areas of the PSB Nursing School Aptitude Examination (RN).
*This course may also be completed as evidence of remediation in the math and natural science subject areas.

Course Structure:
The course will consist of 32 hours of coursework during an 8-week period. Students will meet twice a week for two hours and receive classroom instruction on such topics as: biological chemistry, basic statistics, interpretation of charts and graphs, cell biology, algebra, and human disease. In the final week of class students will review all material covered and complete nursing practice exams. Classes will take place at UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing and generally follow the outline below.
Week 1 Hour 1-4 Introduction to Math and Science
Basic Math overview/Basic chemistry/Basic physics/Basic biology/Medical terminology/units of measurement and Metric system
Week 2 Hour 5-8 Chemistry of life (biological chemistry)
Atoms/molecules/chemical reactions/biologic molecules/biochemistry
Chemical bonds/catalysts/lipids/nucleicacids/proteins/carbohydrates/anabolism/
catabolism/glycolysis/Krebs cycle
Week 3 Hour 9-12 Cell biology
Structure and function of the cell/DNA replication and transcription/protein synthesis/mitosis and meiosis/genes and mutation/heredity/cell differentiation/tissues and organs
Week 4 Hour 13-16 Human organism
Homeostasis/major organ systems -endocrine system/hematopoietic (blood and immune system)/musculoskeletal/digestion-metabolism/reproduction-genitourinay/nervous system
Week 5 Hour 17-20 Human disease
Congenital/Metabolic/Neoplastic/Traumatic/Autoimmune/Degenerative/ Diagnosis/control/prevention/treatment/epidemiology
Week 7 Hour 25-28 Mathematics - Algebra and Geometry
Algebra- variables/coefficients/expressions (binomial, polynomial)/equations and word problems; Geometry- lines/angles/triangles/quadrilaterals/circles; Tables and Charts/Math in nursing practice
Week 8 Hour 29-32 Review and practice exams

Students wishing to enroll in the Entrance Exam Preparation Course: Science and Math should complete a registration application.
