Chatham University and The Mesites Foundation create The Center for the Study of Conflict

Beginning spring 2008 Chatham University, in collaboration with the Mesites Foundation, will offer an undergraduate minor in Conflict Resolution and a graduate Certificate in Conflict Management through the University’s new Center for the Study of Conflict.

The Center for The Study of Conflict combines classroom instruction in mediation and conflict management with field internships in the United States and abroad. The program is designed to provide students with the tools to negotiate and resolve conflict, as well as to cultivate inner wisdom and maturity for application in conflict situations within their domestic professional and social organizations and in any region of the global community.
Undergraduate Minor in Conflict Resolution
Through a combination of classroom instruction, research, writing and internships, the Center for Study of Conflict will help undergraduate students create a unique learning experience in the context of practical approaches to engaging, managing and resolving conflict.

The Minor program includes the following core courses taught by:
  • The Structure and Culture of Conflict (3 credits): Sandi DiMola, Esq.
  • Conflict, Ideology and Radical Social Change (3 credits) Jean-Jacques Sene, Ph. D.
  • Introduction to Alternative Dispute Resolution Robert A. Creo, Esq. (3 credits)
  • Internship (3 credits)
The remaining six credits may be obtained from selected offerings. Your advisor can help you to select those courses. Students may enroll in the minor program and register for The Structure and Culture of Conflict course during fall 2007 semester.
Graduate Certificate in Conflict Management
The graduate Certificate in Conflict Management is designed to bring skills in conflict resolution to Master’s level professionals and advanced graduate students in a variety of fields including leadership, organizational development, social work, counseling, business, education, and others. The Certificate provides a theoretical foundation on the nature of conflict and its socio-political context in diverse environments such as community organizations, businesses, and in the international arena. Students will acquire mediation skills through a series of practicums in the mediation clinic.

A bachelor’s degree in any discipline is required.
