"Innovative Entrepreneurship for a Nonprofit"

As in many other sectors, the economic downturn beginning in September 2008 impacted social service non-profit corporations significantly. Virtually all of the traditional funding sources were diminished; foundation funding, governmental contracts, event fundraising efforts and donations. In addition to seeking funds from traditional sources, the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh is examining the development of new, alternative income streams. Its largest endeavor is entrepreneurial – the opening a Nathan’s Famous food franchise in a portion of its building storefront downtown. The anticipated Grand Opening is mid-2010.
In her presentation, Magdeline (Maggie) Jensen will discuss taking the YWCA on this adventure in entrepreneurship. She will answer questions like: Why did they choose Nathan’s Famous? What was the process in assessing capacity, the market, and projected profit? Is there an impact on the YWCA non-profit status and how will they protect it? Will the restaurant be a program or strictly a business venture? How will we operate it?
Ms. Jensen has been the Chief Executive Officer of the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh since November 2007. The YWCA is a non-profit association whose mission is to eliminate racism and empower women and girls. Founded in 1869, the Association operates 12 programs and five annual events, all of which are managed by more than 200 employees working at four locations throughout Allegheny County.
