Internship Guidelines
Description
An internship is intended to provide students with a greater understanding of professional practice. With approval from the program director, students work in an office environment under the supervision of a practitioner.

Requirements
  1. Site. Students are encouraged to identify an internship site on their own using the list provided by the program director or by networking at professional meetings. Students may complete their internship in an architecture or interior design firm or design showroom. Other potential internship sites should be discussed with the program director. All internship sites must be approved by the program director.
  2. Hours and Compensation. If students are enrolled in both IAR 640 and IAR 641, they are expected to devote 20 hours a week over a 12 week summer session, approximately 34 hours a week over a 7 week summer session, or 30 hours a week over an 8 week summer session (a total of 240 hours for the term). If students are enrolled in IAR 640 or IAR 641, they should anticipate a total of 120 hours of internship work over a term. Students are permitted to receive compensation for their internship experience; compensation is determined by the internship supervisor.
  3. Tasks. Students should anticipate assisting with any one of the following tasks, depending on the needs and wishes of the internship supervisor:
    • Schematic Design
    • Presentation Drawings
    • Construction Drawings
    • Field Measuring
    • Finish, Fixture and Equipment Selections
    • Material Library Maintenance
    • Client Meetings
  4. Reflection Journal. Students are required to keep a written journal throughout the term documenting their internship experience. Entries should be weekly, typed, and dated. The entry length for each week is up to you. You may find that one paragraph is sufficient to convey your thoughts for a particular week or you may feel compelled to write several pages. Do not simply record tasks. Provide an analysis of your observations and emotional and intellectual reactions. When making entries, you may want to think about the following:
    • What were your initial reactions when entering your internship site for the first time?
    • How does this experience relate to your future plans?
    • Are you working well with everyone? Are you encountering any conflicts? How are you addressing problems?
    • Are there any experiences that have confirmed or challenged your perceptions of interior design and practice?
    • What are you learning about yourself from this experience?
    • How would you suggest making this experience better for students in the future?
  5. Time Sheets. Students are required to keep a time sheet for each week and to record how much time was devoted to each project and task.
  6. Evaluation Forms. Students are required to fill out an evaluation form at the end of the term concerning their internship experience. The internship supervisor is also required to fill out an evaluation form for the student at the end of the term and should meet with the student to discuss the evaluation.
  7. Semester Meetings. Students should plan to meet with the program director as a group at the beginning of the term, half way through, and at the end of the term to seek guidance and discuss experiences.
  8. Binder or Folder. At the end of the term, you should turn in a binder or folder that includes the following:
    • Evaluation forms (student and instructor)
    • Reflection Journal
    • Time Sheets
    • Documentation of projects you have worked on
