Chatham University Music

Chatham’s liberal arts environment will develop your critical thinking and effective communication skills while you explore music history, music theory, and the cross-cultural and technological aspects of music. Special emphasis is placed on private training and ample performance opportunities through student recitals, participation in the Chatham University Choir and various ad hoc instrumental ensembles.

Students have opportunities to study privately with members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, some of whom are members of Chatham music faculty. Performances by professional musicians are presented on campus in the Friday Afternoon Musicales and in Chamber Music concerts. Student tickets are available for off-campus performances in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. You may major or minor in Music, or combine it with another discipline to form an interdepartmental major.

Chatham University Choir
The Chatham University Choir, and a smaller group, the Hemidemisemiquavers, are made up of Music majors as well as non-majors, and are active on and off campus. On-campus events include the “Mostly Pops Concert” and the traditional Candlelight event during the holiday season. During its annual tour, the Choir has performed in numerous prominent churches, including Madison Avenue and Riverside Churches in New York City and Washington Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The Choir collaborates with male glee clubs, presenting joint concerts both at Chatham and other colleges. Highlight of this year is the Choir trip to London in the spring semester.

Music Scholarships
In addition to Chatham’s university-wide merit and need-based financial aid, the Music department offers the Minna Kaufmann Ruud Scholarships in Voice. These scholarships are awarded to qualified vocalists interested in studying music as a major or as part of an interdepartmental major. They recognize and support students with outstanding vocal talent. In addition to the scholarship award, the program covers payment of fees for voice lessons and two hours of coaching with the professional coach-accompanist. Vocal scholarship audition requirements include three pieces:
  • An old Italian or Mozart aria
  • An art song in French or German
  • An art song in English by a twentieth century composer
The Senior Tutorial
In addition to courses and internships, you will conduct original research through the senior tutorial. The tutorial is a two-semester independent research project conducted in collaboration with a faculty member. Music tutorials may consist of a performance accompanied by a research paper or involve an in-depth study of the relationship between music and another discipline, such as English, Theatre, Education, Psychology or Communication. Recent tutorials include:
