Chatham University Visual Arts

The Visual Arts major is designed to prepare students to work as visual communicators and artists in a complex, rapidly changing global culture.

The mission of the Visual Arts major is to develop individuals who are capable of working as visual communicators and/or artists in a complex, rapidly changing global culture. To accomplish this mission, the major must: provide students with marketable skills; empower students to not only work with technical applications, but also integrate those skills with critical theories in a creative manner; prepare students to assume creative, scholarly and leadership roles in the media arts field; and promote an understanding of the media arts and the role the arts play in a variety of aspects of contemporary life.

Within the Visual Arts Degree, students may choose a concentration from the following: Electronic Media, Photography and the Studio Arts.

  • Electronic Media Concentration courses emphasize emerging media production and critical analysis of new media forms.
  • Photography and Electronic Media programs are rich in resources, including enlargers, film processing and developing labs, state of the art G-5 and iMAC computer stations, SLR digital cameras, mini-DV cameras, updated graphics and editing software programs, among many others.
  • Studio Arts include Ceramics, Sculpture, Painting, Drawing, and Print-making.
