Global and Public Policy Studies Division
In our dynamic and increasingly integrated world a student’s education must include an understanding of how diverse societies, economies, states, and cultures have changed and developed over time. Students must also understand the moral and intellectual issues that confront a technological and global society. To this end, the Global and Public Policy Division combines Chatham’s traditional social sciences of economics, history, and political science with modern languages, and philosophy and religion.
Students may choose to major in one of the traditional disciplines mentioned above or pursue multidisciplinary programs in global policy, public policy, women’s studies or environmental studies. Although housed in the Division, these multidisciplinary majors draw upon the expertise of faculty across divisions. Students can enrich their educational experience by taking part in the extensive programming of the two Chatham Outreach Centers affiliated with the division: The Rachel Carson Institute and the Pennsylvania Center for Women, Politics and Public Policy.
The goal of the division is to provide Chatham students with the knowledge, experience, and skills needed to rise to leadership in one’s chosen field. Divisional courses prepare students to undertake the capstone independent research project in the major. Internships provide applied knowledge that helps the student to make the transition from undergraduate education to lifelong learning. Courses in the division provide a sound underpinning for diverse careers in areas such as business, law, government and public policy, and for graduate level work in a wide range of academic disciplines.
