Philosophy & Religion FAQs

Can I major in Philosophy or in Religion?
Students who are interested in combining these areas with other disciplines may pursue a minor or self-design a multidisciplinary major that includes courses in Philosophy and Religion.

Why should I take courses in Philosophy?
Philosophy is the fundamental academic discipline. Students who pursue higher education earn a Ph.D. or a Doctor of Philosophy in some academic discipline. Students from any major who are interested in critical thinking, the nature of knowledge, the ethical responsibility of individuals and communities, and the pursuit of wisdom would benefit from a philosophy course.

Why should I take courses in Religion?
Religion courses study how societies have answered questions about the existence of God, why is there evil, and how do I live a good life. Religion courses help students with self-understanding and ethical decision-making, and they provide students with a broader understanding of their own and other cultures. Given the current world situation, these courses are very relevant to help students understand the role of religion in politics.
