Funding Opportunities for Biology Majors

Grants are available from sources on and off campus to help undergraduates explore opportunities associated with the disciplines of science and mathematics. For more information on any of these opportunities please contact the division chair, Dr. Larry Viehland.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at Chatham University
In addition to the support provided by the Hulme fund, Chatham annually awards money for a few students in science and math to work with a Chatham faculty member on his or her research each summer for 12 weeks. The number of positions varies each year. For more information, contact Dr. Larry Viehland.

Aura Raspaldo Hulme ’50 & Milton G. Hulme, Jr. Excellence in Science Endowed Fund
This scholarship fund supports student scholarships, student/faculty research, and student travel to conferences for scientific presentations and is awarded based on merit. At the present time, the fund supports one on-campus summer undergraduate research position (SURP) and a number of trips to scientific conferences.

Travel Funds
Students wishing to apply for travel funds should download and complete the Travel Application Form. The award committee meets four times a year with application deadlines on the first Friday of October, December, February, and April. Completed applications should be returned to Dr. Corey Stilts. Please note: the travel awards support only travel expenses (conference fees, travel, lodging and food); they do not cover poster board, photocopies, experimental supplies, etc. Students must have receipts for reimbursement and food expenses must follow the College's per diem rules.

Western Pennsylvania Biology Undergraduate Research Symposium
Every spring, colleges and universities in the Western Pennsylvania area hold a one-day event where biology undergraduates present their research in the form of professional talks or posters. Past sites include: 2001-St. Vincent's College; 2002-Chatham University; 2003-Washington and Jefferson College; 2004-Carlow College.
