Fellowships

Please note that in all cases we will look at your letter, writing samples, letters of recommendation and GPA to determine top candidates for fellowships.  But as several of the fellowships need particular skill sets, we will also give preference to those top candidates whose skill sets match the needs of the fellowship.  You should apply for one fellowship, but if you feel you also meet the criteria for a second fellowship, mention this in your fellowship letter of application, and you will be considered for the second fellowship if you are not awarded your first preference.

The MFA Program will offer the following fellowships for 2010-2011:

The Margaret L. Whitford Fellowship
: This Fellowship carries a full-tuition remission for two years (approximately $12,000 per year depending on class load). This Fellow will be expected to take a leadership role in the MFA student organization and needs to have demonstrable leadership skills.

The Rachel Carson Fellowship: This Research Assistant Fellowship carries a $10,000 stipend for one year with the possibility of applying again for the second year. Duties involve assisting the MFA Program Director with research, creative and other projects.  The Carson Fellow designs and edits the annual MFA newsletter in the Spring term.  This Fellow needs to be mature, responsible and have skills with detail, computer skills and people skills.  10 hours a week.

The Fourth River Fellowship: This Fellowship carries a $10,000 stipend for one year, with duties as managing editor of The Fourth River literary journal. Candidates should have experience with a literary journal or other related experience.  May apply again for the second year. 10 hours a week.

The Teaching Fellowship: We offer 2-3 Teaching Fellowships a year which carry stipends from $9,000-$10,000 stipend for one year. May apply again for the second year. Duties may include assisting professors with undergraduate creative writing classes; assisting with BFA tutorials and working in the writing center. 10 hours a week.

Please note there are also several work positions for graduate students, and that there may be other university-wide fellowships for which you are eligible that are not listed here.  Contact Nancy Ferarri (nferrari@chatham.edu) for more information on work and university-wide fellowships.

Please download the FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION and submit with your application to the program if you are interested in any of these fellowships.
