The Rachel Carson Fellowship for Creative Writing Students

The Chatham MFA program offers a $10,000 Rachel Carson Fellowship to a qualified incoming MFA student. The award will be paid out $5,000 a semester; the student must be a full-time student (carrying 9 hours) to be eligible for the award. It is possible that the award could be split between two students, so that each would receive $5,000.

To be eligible for the award for the 2007-2008 year, incoming students must show demonstrated interest in nature or environmental writing, and submit a creative writing sample, along with a completed cover page to Sheryl St. Germain, MFA Director, by February 15, 2008. The award will be based on excellence of the creative writing sample, and the potential contribution the student might make to the genre of nature or environmental creative writing.

The responsibilities that come with the fellowship are (1) to serve as an assistant to the MFA director with respect to the MFA reading series and (2) to take a leadership role in the programming and continued development of the MFA student organization.

Students applying for the low-residency MFA program are not eligible for the Rachel Carson Fellowship.
