Expanding the abundance: understanding the vegetable life continuum.

In this workshop participants will be led through a variety of vegetable fermentation methods in order to to creatively reduce food waste and increase their health. The workshop will include a discussion to expand the perception of what is edible in an ingredient's life cycle.

Come to Chatham’s Eden Hall Campus for a night of creativity with your community. Experts from Chatham and from the community teach you both the technical aspects and the social context behind topical sustainability projects around food, ecology and energy. Then, we provide materials for you to be creative and experiment with your new knowledge. This event is intergenerational, and open for all ages. Materials will not be sent home with participants unless otherwise noted.

Meet your instructors!

Smiley face Jill Ciciarelli is a food lover, kitchen adventurer, board-certified holistic-health coach, and keeper of the blog First Comes Health. With a bachelor’s degree in psychology from The Pennsylvania State University, a bachelor’s degree in Italian language and literature from the University of Pittsburgh, and certification from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in holistic health, Jill has channeled her various passions into instilling a desire for long-term health in her clients. You can find her fermenting and experimenting in her urban high-rise kitchen and follow along with her on her website, First Comes Health. Jill lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with her husband, Brian (aka Dude), and Quincy, the sweetest kitty in the world.

Smiley face Katie Walker will always be a Northern Californian at heart, but caught the travel bug early and loves getting out of her comfort zone. Living (and eating) in the Czech Republic, Thailand, and Japan led to her passion for food and agriculture, which is what eventually brought her to Pittsburgh to pursue an MA in Food Studies at Chatham University, which she just completed in September of 2015. Katie is passionate about: sustainable agriculture, fermentation, the power of good food, and the importance of soil.
