The Women's Institute is proud to be hosting a staged reading of “Molly’s Hammer,” about Pittsburgh peace activist — and co-founder of the Thomas Merton Center— Molly Rush. The play is written by Pittsburgh playwright Tammy Ryan and based on local author Liane Ellison Norman’s book, “Hammer of Justice”.

The story of Molly’s Hammer revolves around the real-life actions of a protest group called the “Plowshares 8” who made headlines in 1980 for their civil disobedience demonstration against nuclear warfare. On September 9 of that year, the group entered a General Electric plant in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and hammered on nuclear warhead nosecones as well as poured their own blood on company documents. The professional reading of “Molly’s Hammer” takes place exactly 36 years after this bold event to alert Americans of our Government’s amassing weapons of global destruction.
