Global Focus Year of Africa: Reading and Book Signing by All-Campus Author Sefi Atta

Sefi Atta, award winning Nigerian author, will be visit-ing Chatham's campus Thursday Nov. 5, 2009. There will be an 11:30 a.m. Lunch Presentation entitled "My Life and Work" in the PCW Room of Anderson Dining Hall. At 7:00 p.m., there will be a public reading, Q&A, and book signing in the Welker Room of the Laughlin Music Center.

Sefi Atta was born in Lagos, Nigeria. She was educated there, in England and the United States. A former chartered accountant and CPA, she is a graduate of the creative writing program at Antioch University, Los An-geles. Her short stories have appeared in journals like Los Angeles Review and Mississippi Review and have won prizes from Zoetrope and Red Hen Press. Her radio plays have been broadcast by the BBC. She is the winner of PEN Interna-tional's 2004/2005 David TK Wong Prize and in 2006, her debut novel Everything Good Will Come was awarded the inaugural Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa. She lives in Mississippi with her husband Gboyega Ransome-Kuti, a medical doctor, and their daughter, Temi.

Global Focus recommends: SEMBENE FILM FESTIVAL at PITT

A film and arts festival honoring the life, art and legacy of Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembène on Friday and Saturday, November 13 – 14, 2009.
Ousmane Sembène (1923 – 2007) produced a vast body of work that spanned more than 50 years. He was an internationally known writer before he embarked on a career as a filmmaker at age 40. During his lifetime in produced nine full-length feature films, five short films, four documentaries, five novels and five collections of short stories. Sembène is internationally known as the “Father of African Cinema” and regarded as one of the most prolific filmmakers of this century.

Valerie Njie is the Executive Director and Vice President of Operations for the nationally recognized Bidwell Training Center. Dr. Stella Williams is professor of Agricultural Economics and member of the Steering Committee of the African Women in Research and Development (AWARD), Gender & Development Unit. She is also on the Board of Trustees of the "International Potato Institute" (CIP) based in Lima, Peru. A former professor and chair at Obafemi Awolowo University (Nigeria), she has served on numerous international boards, has been a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence, and is the author of two books.

Vijay Mahajan holds the John P. Harbin Centennial Chair in Business at McCombs School of Business, University of Texas at Austin.
