Biography

Dr. Ashburn's professional credentials include a doctorate in Psychology of Reading from Temple University; Pennsylvania supervisory certifications as a Reading Specialist and Curriculum & Instruction Supervision; Pennsylvania teaching certifications in elementary education, reading, English, and ESL. Public school experience includes ten years as an elementary classroom teacher; reading specialist; ESL testing specialist, Title 1 Coordinator; supervisory experience as a reading supervisor, Director of Language Arts, Federal Programs, and ESL/Bilingual Education Program. Higher Education experience includes teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the areas of literacy, how to teach English language learners, and in teacher preparation. Personal experiences in elementary and secondary public education enable Dr. Ashburn to provide university students with the practical view of teaching in addition to the research-based theories and instructional strategies that are presented in course content. Experience in teaching English to second language learners at elementary and secondary grade levels has prepared Dr. Ashburn to assist pre-service teachers meet their responsibilities of meeting the needs of their ELL students.
