Chatham University's Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) and Master of Science in Landscape Architecture (MSLA) Programs prepares students for professional careers in landscape architecture. It has a particular emphasis on educating and training a generation of professionals who are grounded in the principles of sustainable design and planning; knowledgeable about the advanced approaches of environmental conservation and management; and skillful in applying ecologically responsible methods and techniques in all types of development.

Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA)

The MLA program of study leading to the first-professional degree at Chatham University has received full accreditation from the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) since 2007. This first-professional degree, which requires 78 credits, is designed for students who have an undergraduate degree in non-design fields.

Master of Science in Landscape Architecture (MSLA)

The MSLA program is designed for individuals who have already earned an undergraduate degree in Landscape Architecture or another related sustainable field. It offers a research degree that aids students in developing their scholarly focus and can prepare graduates for future doctoral work. This two year, writing intensive curriculum capitalizes on a student’s current knowledge and allows them a means of specializing within their field. This degree is not accredited by ASLA.

The conceptual framework of the curriculum helps the student in discovering his/her potential area of specialization and future career interest. Upon completing their degrees, graduates should be able to function as members of the typical landscape architecture team in private and public sectors, or in academic or research centers. To produce such a graduate, the primary goal of Chatham University’s Landscape Architecture Program is to create a center of excellence in teaching, learning, and research.
