Chatham University hosts Obama Administration’s Startup America: Reducing Barriers Roundtables on April 28

Administration officials will hear from entrepreneurs on ways to reduce barriers, encourage business growth

PITTSBURGH (April 26, 2011) … Chatham University and its Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship will serve as the Pittsburgh host for “Startup America: Reducing Barriers Roundtables,” a White House initiative to celebrate, inspire, and accelerate high-growth entrepreneurship throughout the nation, on Thursday, April 28 beginning at 9:00 a.m. This coordinated public/private effort brings together an alliance of the country’s most innovative entrepreneurs, corporations, universities, foundations, and other leaders, working in concert with a wide range of federal agencies to dramatically increase the prevalence and success of America’s entrepreneurs.

As part of the White House’s Startup America initiative, senior Obama Administration officials will visit eight sites around the country, including Pittsburgh to meet with entrepreneurs and hear directly from them on ideas and suggestions for reducing barriers and improving regulations to build a more supportive environment for entrepreneurship and innovation. Officials attending the event at Chatham’s Shadyside Campus include Assistant Secretary of Commerce John Fernandez, Deputy Director of the US Patent and Trademark Office Teresa Rae and Senior Economist at the Council of Economic Advisors Ronnie Chatterji.

“Chatham is honored to be selected as one of the eight host sites around the country for this event,” said Esther L. Barazzone, Ph.D., Chatham President. “As an entrepreneurial institution, we know the importance for businesses to break the mold and develop programs that address both workplace needs and careers of the future. Rebecca Harris, director of the Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship, added, “Entrepreneurs are the backbone of economic growth and this is a great opportunity for regional entrepreneurs and senior administration officials to work together to strengthen the economy and promote innovation. We especially hope that the administration will learn the value that women entrepreneurs bring to the table since they continue to develop many successful and innovative small businesses throughout the United States.”

According to a recent study by American Express Open, Pennsylvania is ranked seventh among all 50 states with approximately 282,600 women-owned firms, an increase of 40 percent since 1997. However, the state lags in revenue growth at women-owned businesses during that same period, coming in 36th place.

Carl Knoblock, director of the Small Business Administration’s Pittsburgh district, notes that “Startup America is an excellent tool to really give businesses the opportunity to speak up for a change about all the barriers that challenge them from being really successful, not only from the regulatory barriers that are commonly thought of but also from financial and other barriers that are not typically considered.”

“What’s unique about Chatham University being selected is that Chatham is a small yet innovative university that has integrated sustainability throughout its mission to reduce its carbon footprint,” Mr. Knoblock added. “Chatham is taking leadership role in sustainability and that is what we want small businesses to do in the future and hopefully reducing existing barriers will help them get there.”

According to The White House, the Startup America initiative will support startups and entrepreneurs, giving them the tools and resources to grow America’s economy and win the future. Using the input from the roundtables and broader public participation, the Administration will produce a report highlighting ideas to streamline and simplify unnecessary barriers to America’s entrepreneurs and innovators.

The core goals of Startup America are to increase the number and scale of new high-growth firms that are creating economic growth, innovation, and quality jobs; celebrate and honor entrepreneurship as a core American value and source of competitive advantage; and inspire and empower an ever-greater diversity of communities and individuals to build great American companies.

Three-year Bachelor of Interior Architecture program receives accreditation from Council for Interior Design Accreditation

PITTSBURGH (April 25, 2011) … The Bachelor of Interior Architecture (BIA)program at Chatham University has received six-year accreditation from the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), according to an announcement by Laura Armesto, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs.

The BIA is the one of the first degree programs in the U.S. to be offered in a three-year format. The format saves students a full year of tuition and is distinctive from other three-year degree programs which require summer study. Chatham’s BIA also emphasizes sustainable design and includes study abroad in Italy.

“This is tremendous recognition for a program that was founded only seven years ago and transitioned to a three-year format in 2009,” noted Lori Anthony, program director. “I want to thank CIDA for recognizing our program’s foundation in sustainable design as well as its new three-year format.”

“Lori has designed a three-year program that is gaining national recognition because it allows students to obtain internships and work experience through the summer months and not spend time in the classroom,” said Dr. Armesto. “CIDA’s accreditation is proof that the academic rigor of Chatham’s BIA meets professional standards that prepare our graduates for careers in interior architecture.”

The three-year BIA program utilizes concurrent seven-week intensive design studios within a 14-week term, allowing greater opportunities for specialized learning experiences. Because of this unique sequencing, students do not take credit overloads or summer courses, allowing them to participate in study abroad or internships.

Chatham’s Interior Architecture program is a professional interior design curriculum that stresses holistic design integrated with sustainability and the environment. Design studios encourage students to explore the built environment of various building types such as healthcare, residential, retail and hospitality, while lecture courses impart the design knowledge needed to create meaningful spaces. The University also offers a CIDA- accredited Master of Interior Architecture degree and a post-professional, online Master of Science in Interior Architecture degree.

PITTSBURGH (April 20, 2011) … Chatham University will graduate its 139th class of undergraduate women and its 17th class of graduate women and men during its first combined commencement on Sunday, May 22 at 10:00 a.m. in Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland. Trustee Louise Brown (Class of 1967), President Esther L. Barazzone, Ph.D. and Vice President for Academic Affairs Laura S. Armesto, Ph.D. will preside over the ceremonies.

Four of Pittsburgh’s most distinguished arts leaders will be honored with honorary doctorates of humane letters: Henry Reese and Diane Samuels, co-founders of City of Asylum/Pittsburgh; and Barbara Luderowski andMichael Olijnyk, co-directors of The Mattress Factory. Commencement exercises will include graduates from each of the University’s three colleges: Chatham College for Women (undergraduate), the College for Graduate Studies, and the College for Continuing and Professional Studies.

City of Asylum/Pittsburgh provides sanctuary to writers exiled under threat of death, imprisonment, or persecution in their home countries. City of Asylum/Pittsburgh provides writers with a stipend, medical benefits, assistance in transitioning to a life in the U.S., and a house in which to live in Pittsburgh’s North Side community. Since the program’s inception in 2004, three exiled writers have participated in the residency program: Huang Xiang from China; Horacio Castellanos Moya from El Salvador; and Khet Mar from Burma. More than 100 other writers, poets and musicians from 20 countries have been involved with City of Asylum/Pittsburgh community programs and fundraisers. City of Asylum/Pittsburgh also publishes Sampsonia Way, an online magazine which extends the mission of the program into the global community and bring the world to the local community. The magazine features writers in the program and their peers around the country, as well as writers from around the world. Its intent is to gain exposure for endangered writers on a global and local scale.

Pittsburgh’s Mattress Factory is one of the preeminent contemporary art exhibition spaces in the world. Since its founding in 1977 by sculptor Barbara Luderowski, the museum has championed installation art and has showcased some of the most interesting and site-specific works in the United States, including works by John Cage, Damien Hirst and Anne Hamilton. The museum’s permanent collection includes works by internationally acclaimed artists James Turrell, Bill Woodrow, Jene Highstein, Rolf Julius, Yayoi Kusama, and an archaeological and environmental garden by Winifred Lutz. Mattress Factory also runs an artist-in-residence program for artists from around the world. Like its neighbor City of Asylum/Pittsburgh, the Mattress Factory has been a catalyst for transformation of Pittsburgh’s North Side community.

Chatham featured among North America’s Most Environmentally-Responsible Colleges in The Princeton Review

PITTSBURGH (April 20, 2011) … Chatham University is one of the most environmentally responsible colleges in the U.S.A. and Canada, according to The Princeton Review (www.PrincetonReview.com). The well-known education services company selected Chatham University for inclusion in the just-released second annual edition of its free downloadable book, The Princeton Review’s Guide to 311 Green Colleges: 2011 Edition.

Chatham University joins the ranks of outstanding universities and colleges nationwide that are leading the sustainability movement through their own special programs and initiatives. The University includes its historic 39-acre Shadyside Campus and 388-acre Eden Hall Campus in Richland Township, Pa. Eden Hall Campus is the first university campus in the nation built from the ground up to integrate sustainable development, living and learning. Eden Hall Campus will be home to Chatham’s pioneering new School of Sustainability and the Environment – the second freestanding university school of sustainability in the United States.

The Princeton Review chose the schools for this guide based on a survey of administrators at hundreds of colleges that the Company polled in 2010 about their school’s sustainability initiatives.

Released on April 20, just two days prior to the April 22 celebration of the 41h Anniversary of Earth Day, the guide has profiles of the colleges that provide application information plus facts, stats, and write-ups reporting on the schools’ environmentally related policies, practices and academic offerings. The Princeton Review chose the 311 schools based on a survey it conducted in 2010 of hundreds of colleges across the U.S. and in Canada to tally its annual “Green Rating” scores (scaled from 60 to 99) of colleges for its school profiles in its college guidebooks and website. The survey asks administrators more than 50 questions about their institution’s sustainability-related policies, practices and programs. The Company tallied Green Ratings for 703 institutions in summer 2010. The 311 schools in this guide received scores of 80 or above in that assessment.
