PITTSBURGH: Chatham University’s Falk School of Sustainability & Environment will host the Food and Climate Change Conference on Saturday, October 14, 2017 from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM at the Esther Barazzone Center of Chatham’s Eden Hall Campus in Richland, PA.
The conference will explore the intersection between food and climate change, and feature a locally sourced breakfast and lunch, student research demonstrations, breakout sessions and keynote talks from renowned authors Frances Moore Lappé and Julie Guthman.

About Frances Moore Lappé
Frances Moore Lappé is the author or co-author of 18 books about world hunger, living democracy, and the environment. Beginning with the three-million copy Diet for a Small Planet in 1971, her books include Democracy’s Edge, Getting a Grip (in two editions), EcoMind, and, most recently, World Hunger: 10 Myths. With a focus on the roots of the U.S. democracy crisis and how Americans are creatively responding to the challenge, her current work includes the online Field Guide to the Democracy Movement and the forthcoming book Daring Democracy: Igniting Power, Meaning, and Connection for the America We Want, coauthored with Adam Eichen (Beacon Press, Sept. 2017). Frances was named by Gourmet Magazine as one of 25 people (including Thomas Jefferson, Upton Sinclair, and Julia Child), whose work has changed the way America eats.
Frances makes frequent media appearances and is the recipient of 18 honorary doctorates from distinguished institutions. In 2008 she received the James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year Award for her lifelong impact on the way people all over the world think about food, nutrition, and agriculture.
About Julie Guthman
Julie Guthman’s book published in 2004, Agrarian Dreams: The Paradox of Organic Farming in California, was the first comprehensive study of organic agriculture in California. Guthman’s second book, Weighing In: Obesity, Food Justice, and the Limits of Capitalism, challenges assumptions concerning the “obesity epidemic”. Released just this past June, her third book co-edited with Alison Alkon, The New Food Activism: Opposition, Cooperation, and Collective Action discusses how more intricate social, racial, and economic engagement with food activism can help to broaden and transform the food system. Guthman is a winner of a 2017 Guggenheim Fellowship.
