PITTSBURGH: The American Society of Civil Engineers, Pittsburgh Section has presented Chatham University’s Eden Hall Campus the 2016 Sustainability Award for Stormwater Management and Sanitary Systems. Previous winners of the award include Phipps Conservatory and Etna Green Streetscapes Project. Civil & Environmental Consultants, Biohabitats and Interface Engineering are the project engineers.
The Sustainability Award is made annually to an engineering project in recognition of creativity in the form of innovative sustainability. Projects must demonstrate innovation in sustainability, first and foremost, demonstrating adherence to the principles of economic, social and environmental sustainability. The criteria used to evaluate projects are: (a) the extent to which innovative design or construction methods improve economic, social and environmental sustainability; (b) the promise shown by the innovation to extend future developments in sustainability; (c) the degree to which the project extends public understanding of sustainability in construction; and d) the anticipated advantages to be obtained as a result of the project.

PITTSBURGH: Chatham University’s Eden Hall Farm has received a Certificate of Organic Operation from Pennsylvania Certified Organic. This Certificate guarantees that the Farm is compliant with the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program (7 CFR Part 205), and that products grown on the farm meet all organic standards. This certification allows Eden Hall Campus to continue its expansion as a teaching tool for students interested in organic certification, or for local growers wanting to know more about the certification process.
PITTSBURGH: The American Institute of Architects, Pittsburgh Chapter, has presented an Award of Excellence in the category of Engineering and Science for Chatham University’s Eden Hall Campus storm and waste water management systems.
In commenting on the award, the judges said, “This project reminds us of the importance of water, and also basic and natural technologies that are highly effective. The complete built project functions as an efficient machine while never giving the appearance of being a machine. As a first phase of a proposed new campus, the standards are already set impressively high.”
PITTSBURGH: Chatham University and the Falk School of Sustainability will be hosting the “Bridging the Past, Cultivating the Future: Exploring Sustainable Foodscapes” event from June 24-28th. Chatham’s Shadyside campus and new, net zero Eden Hall Campus will serve as the locations for the Joint 2015 Annual Meeting and Conference of the Association for the Study of Food and Society (ASFS) and the Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society (AFHVS). The conference will involve three days of academic and practitioner presentations; tours of sustainable communities, food, and agriculture; a banquet; and many activities and workshops.
PITTSBURGH: Chatham University and the Falk School of Sustainability are pleased to welcome Dr. Tom Macagno, Ph.D., to the campus as Assistant Professor of Sustainability and Business.
Dr. Macagno arrived at Chatham this September from the United Kingdom to teach in the Falk School’s programs including the new, dual masters degree in sustainability and business. This timely degree will expose students to applied sustainability principles in addition to eco-innovation, stakeholder engagement, communications and leadership, in particular.
