Pittsburgh’s Sustainable Green lecture series continues with architect Lars Danielson

Pittsburgh, PA - PITTSBURGH (October 30, 2006) … Pittsburgh’s Sustainable Green, a free lecture series co-sponsored by Chatham College’s Interior Architecture and Landscape Architecture programs and the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of History of Art and Architecture, continues in November with Organic Architecture for a Sustainable Future. Featuring architect Lars Danielson, the lecture will be at the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium on Wednesday, November 1 at 6:00 p.m. For more information call 412-365-2978.
Organic Architecture for a Sustainable Future

Mr. Danielsson is a leader in the Swedish field of ecological building, and his lecture is part of a US tour sponsored by the American Institute of Architects and the American Scandinavian Foundation. His lecture series is related to the publication of his book “The House That Wanted a Garden - a home in the world” that he published with his wife Louise. The lecture will explore to what extent the pioneers of “Organic Architecture” have anything to teach in present strivings for ecological building for a sustainable future. He will give a brief account of current ecological building experiments in Sweden such as a residential settlement in Gothenburg with no conventional central heating device and other developments. A national Commission on Energy is presently preparing extensive proposals for the substitution of oil for other energy resources. The Vidar Clinic, an antroposophical hospital south of Stockholm will be shown as an example of "Organic Architecture" with careful consideration for the environment.

Why does sustainability matter, what are sustainable metrics, and how are some projects developing responses to sustainable issues? April Philips has taken a leadership role amongst landscape architects in reshaping how the world thinks about sustainable landscapes. She will speak about recent projects that are pushing sustainable boundaries in addressing regional issues. As national chairperson of the American Society of Landscape Architect's Sustainable Design and Development group, April will also provide an update on the Sustainable Site Initiative, a proposed framework tool to encourage site sustainability that ASLA and industry partners are in the process of developing.
