Carson provided one of the earliest examples of bringing scientific perspective and rigor to important societal issues, and her influential writings inspired a generation of environmental activists. Silent Spring sparked wide-spread public debate on the issue of pesticide use and potential environmental degradation. The book established environmentalism as a credible concern to be addressed in public policy and scientific inquiry and brought about fundamental changes in the management and regulation of chemicals. In a two-hour program, the panel will reflect on the legacy of Silent Spring and remark on the status of environmental chemistry and health today. |
