Ecology...

from the Greek oikos, 'house' or 'place to live' and logos, 'the study of'. Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with one another and their environment. The central focus is the interaction. The modern environmental movement was launched with the goal of preserving the house in which we live, to be life sustaining and self-sustaining.

Chatham eCollegie is our brand name for a Campus Greening Project designed to make the campus community aware of its interaction with the environment, as well as to take action to live more sustainably in that environment. 'Chatham eCollegie' was coined to evoke the notion that we are a place that studies our impact on the environment and takes it seriously. It also serves as a call to action. Chatham eCollegie is the on-going study of our house and the interaction of our community with the environment.

"Can anyone believe it is possible to lay down such a barrage of poisons on the surface of the earth without making it unfit for all life? They should not be called 'insecticides,' but 'biocides.'"
- Rachel Carson, Silent Spring (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1962), pp. 7-8.
