Other Campus Policies
Smoking Policy
To protect the health of University students and employees from the negative effects of second-hand smoke, the University strongly discourages the use of tobacco products and prohibits its use in all indoor areas of the University. This includes, but is not limited to, auditoriums, theaters, library, computer labs, classrooms, conference and meeting spaces, lounges, dining facilities (Anderson dining hall, snack bar), reception areas, residence buildings, and offices. Smoking is also prohibited in University vehicles.
Smoking in University owned, student residences is prohibited in all the residence halls and the Chatham Apartments. Persons in violation of this policy will be subjected to University disciplinary action as well as the penalties specified in the smoking pollution control ordinance of the City of Pittsburgh.
Computing Ethics Statement
It is expected that all users of the University’s computing resources, including personal computers, campus e-mail system, public access systems, and student management system users will use the resources in a reasonable ethical and legal manner in accord with Chatham’s Honr Code. Following are some general guidelines to which all users are expected to adhere:
- On shared computer systems every user is assigned a user account. Use of an account is not transferable to another person. The owner of an account will be held accountable for all actions issuing from that account. Computer accounts must be requested in writing.
- The use of the University server or e-mail addresses in manners that violate the Chatham University Honor Code are not permissible. These include but are not limited to harassment, forgery, e-mail ‘spamming,’ and propagation of chain e-mail and virus hoaxes.
- Files should be assumed to be private and confidential unless the owner has explicitly made them available to others. Users may not access, copy, rename, change, or delete files belonging to someone else without authorization.
- No user may copy, or attempt to copy, any proprietary or licensed software provider installed by Chatham University.
- You may not install your personal copies of software on any University-owned computer, unless you can document ownership of the software. Stolen or bootleg copies of software are not allowed on any Chatham University computing system.
- All messages sent to other users should identify the sender. Obscenities should not be sent by computer mail or used on University owned computers.
- No one may deliberately attempt to degrade or disrupt system performance or to interfere with the work of others.
- All personal computers connected to the campus network must be running virus protection software. Circumvention of the virus protection will cause loss of access to computing resources.
- It is contrary to University policies to use a University computer for non-University work. Any use of computing for commercial purposes or personal financial gain must be authorized in advance.
- On rare occasions, computing staff may access others’ files, but only when strictly necessary for the maintenance of a system. Records relating to the use of computing the information resources are confidential.
- Any question as to the interpretation of these guidelines is to be directed to the Director of the Information Technology. As with most matters of law and ethics, ignorance of the rules does not excuse violations. Failure to comply with these guidelines may lead to disciplinary action.
