Student Life

Chatham’s Office of Student Affairs fosters the synergistic relationship between the academic and co-curricular experience by providing opportunities for personal growth and development through a diversity of programs and services that challenge and support students, faculty and staff within the Chatham community. Our mission is based on a desire to increase self-awareness, encourage social responsibility, enhance cultural awareness, develop leadership ability, establish a lifestyle of wellness and make connections with others as we endeavor to serve in the societies of today and lead in the world of tomorrow.
Residence Life
Chatham’s residence life program is directed at supporting students in their academic pursuits and actively contributing to the personal growth and development of each student through co-curricular activities. Chatham’s residential philosophy is predicated upon the belief that residence hall and apartment living enhances a student’s education by contributing to an individual’s academic, social and personal development.

The University supplies each student with the following furnishings in her residence hall room: single bed, standard size mattress, dresser, study desk, and desk chair. One graduate resident director (GRD) lives in every residence hall with a staff of undergraduate resident advisors (RAs).
Student Activities
The staff in student activities believes that each experience at Chatham University is an integral part of your education. As a significant portion of your college experience will take place outside the classroom, we recognize the importance of a student’s involvement in co-curricular activities. Your involvement in campus activities will allow you to develop skills that you will utilize throughout your personal and professional life. Therefore, the student activities staff, as well as the rest of the staff, works cooperatively with faculty, staff, and students to provide a wide array of student activities.

Student Activities organizes a myriad of programs and events open to the entire campus community, ranging from traditional events like Battle of the Classes and Spring Fling to cultural/entertaining performances on and off campus to community service events like our Alternative Spring Breaks and the Hunger Banquet. If we do not offer a program you are interested in, please feel free to suggest it! We welcome new ideas. In addition, we seek to foster self growth and holistic development through a wide variety of developmental workshops, conferences and events.

In addition to sponsoring special events, student activities serves as a resource center for student organizations that need assistance in programming – how to plan, what to plan, when to plan, publicity suggestions, where to contact film and entertainment agencies, etc.

The Office of Student Activities also maintains a calendar of campus events and provides information concerning off-campus activities at other colleges and events around the city.
Athletics
The Department of Athletics at Chatham University provides a full range of athletic activities to meet the needs of all students.

Varsity Athletics
Chatham is a member of the NCAA Division III and sponsors nine intercollegiate sports: basketball, cross-country, ice hockey, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, volleyball and water polo.

Facilities
In addition to organized athletic activities, the Athletic and Fitness Center (AFC) offers facilities for squash, rock climbing, swimming, strength training and cardio fitness. The AFC is open mornings, evenings and weekends for the campus community.
Counseling Services
The Office of Counseling Services is a place where students can feel comfortable seeking assistance in individual brief counseling/therapy or an external referral if the need should arise. Counseling brochures are also available on a wide variety of subjects.

Students involved in treatment with an external mental health professional are strongly encouraged to remain in treatment or to obtain comparable treatment locally in order to maintain continuity of care.

Nearly 12% of our students here at Chatham take advantage of our counseling services, and the Counseling Center is known on campus as a comfortable, confidential, and friendly place for students to seek assistance.

There is no fee for counseling services at Chatham University. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The office is also involved on campus in very informal ways. It provides many educational workshops such as stress and time management, adjustment to campus, healthy communication skills, and many other programs. We enjoy helping students through these events.

If you have any questions about counseling services, or if there is anything that the office can do to make your experience at Chatham more comfortable one, please don’t hesitate to Elsa M. Arce, Director of Counseling Services, at 412-365-1282 (arce@chatham.edu).
Health Services

The Office of Health Services is open to all registered Chatham students. The office provides care for most illnesses and injuries and has an extensive referral list for those in need of primary or specialist care. The office is located on the ground floor of Woodland Hall and is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. No appointments are necessary (unless requested) to see a nurse; but appointments are necessary to see the staff physicians. Nominal fees are billed to student accounts for physician fees and ordered tests as the office does not direct bill any insurance company.

The staff of the Health Services office is committed to providing students with excellence in assessment and care of illness or injury. Along with PEACHES (Peer Educators at Chatham in Health), the office sponsors health and wellness workshops and programs on campus throughout the academic year.

All incoming students are required to file medical information forms with the office of health services before the first day of classes. ( The meningitis waiver form is required of all students living in campus housing.) Any questions regarding the meningitis vaccine or waiver should be directed to Joanne Kurtz, Director of Health Services, at 412-365-1238 (jkurz@chatham.edu)

Questions regarding the Chatham Student Accident and Sickness Plan should be directed to Special Risk Consultants at 610-489- 6100 or to their website at www.visitsrc.com.
