Health and Safety Inspections
Health and safety inspections of each room and apartment are conducted once per semester to identify and correct any health, safety, fire safety, sanitation or maintenance issues that may be present in a student living space.
We provide this service for the following reasons:
To help students learn how to maintain a clean and safe environment in their room, and promote a better understanding of the expectations the university has for students living on campus;
To assist in the prevention of rodent and pest infestations, damage problems and other issues that impact the health and safety, as well as the quality of life for all students living in the residence halls; and
To assist us in properly maintaining the condition of our residence halls.
What happens during Health and Safety Inspections?
You will be notified of the date and approximate time of your residence hall’s inspection time. A minimum of two university staff members will conduct a visual inspection of the room/apartment. If you are not at home, these staff members will key into your apartment to conduct the inspection.
The staff members will be looking for:
A reasonably clean space. While we understand (and encourage!) that your room will be “lived in”, but we expect a reasonable and sincere effort will be made to keep your space sanitary. Apartment residents should take particular care that kitchens and bathrooms are free of spills, mildew and trash.
A space free of prohibited items. The complete list of prohibited items is on page 41 of the student handbook. A few highlights to remember: underage students may not possess alcohol, nor display alcohol containers as decoration, halogen lamps are not permitted, pets are not permitted, anything with an open flame (candles, incense) is prohibited and space heaters and air conditioners that were not installed by the university are also prohibited.
Working, unobstructed fire detection devices.
Any maintenance problems that can be submitted to facilities management.
Do I have to be home?
In short, no. This is simply a visual inspection and you will receive a report of any findings. We will key in to you room if you are not there, per the Terms and Conditions of Residency, 2007-08 . Please note, however, that if we find a door unlocked, we will lock it when we leave. As always, you should lock your door and carry your keys.
How do I know if I passed?
You will receive a copy of the inspection report at the conclusion of the inspection. The inspection report will include a list of any confiscated prohibited items. You may also receive a written request from your GRD to meet if the inspection revealed reason to believe that a violation of residence hall policy occurred.
