Internships & Student Work

Read on to learn what to expect around internships and student work.

Campus Employment

Student employment opportunities will be available during the fall semester.  The nature, responsibilities, and expectations of some positions may be different this year as we navigate considerations for COVID-19 mitigation. Supervisors are encouraged to continue offering hybrid or virtual work options where appropriate and able – please note that some student employment positions must be performed on-ground and in-person, while others may lend themselves to virtual work.

If you are a returning student employee, we encourage you to contact your supervisor directly to find out more about any specific changes or adjustments to positions, and to discuss any safety concerns, considerations, or accommodations you may need in light of the pandemic.

Internship Requirements & Exceptions

Internships are still a requirement for all undergraduate students. While on-the-ground internship opportunities may have been impacted by the pandemic, many employers and organizations are offering virtual internships this fall. Career Development is working with campus and community partners to develop additional opportunities that will be posted to Handshake as they become available.

Because of the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, Chatham is offering additional ways for students to fulfill their three-credit internship requirement in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021:

  • Independent study: Students may register for and complete an independent study with a faculty member or members in their discipline. This independent study would count as the internship. This substitution will only be allowed after the student works with Career Development to discuss more traditional options.
  • Prior Learning Assessment (PLA): Students with at least five years of professional, full time work experience in the field in which they are seeking their degree may be granted internship credits for work completed.
  • On-campus internships: On-campus internships must be clearly aligned with a student’s academic and professional goals, and be defined through finite responsibilities that can be completed during the articulated timeline.

More information on internship exceptions is available at MyChatham > Career Development > Documents & Forms.
