Quarantine & Isolation

Read on for what you need to know about quarantine and isolation due to COVID-19. 

Definitions

Quarantine and self-isolation play an important role in keeping our community safe, but it is important to understand the difference. 

Isolation – A student is placed in isolation if they test positive for COVID-19 or are referred to testing because they are displaying symptoms of COVID-19. Residents who must isolate will always be moved to isolation/quarantine space. A positive COVID-19 test will require isolation for at least 10 days. 

Quarantine – A student who is directed to quarantine is someone who has been exposed to COVID-19.

Shelter-in-Place – A student is directed to remain in their residence hall assignment and limit movements on campus to necessities (i.e. bathroom and food). Shelter-in-Place may be used if:

  • The university is a high alert level.
  • In the case of necessary cleaning due to positive case on the residence hall.  Students may be asked to complete a rapid test during a shelter in place.

Isolation Guidelines

All students who are self-isolating are expected to:

  • Stay in the space assigned and do not go to class, work or participate in any campus activities. Students will be connected with the Office of Academic & Accessibility Resources (OAAR) for faculty notifications and accommodations.
  • Participate in a contact tracing interview (required for positive cases) with Chatham and ACHD.
  • Do not leave the space provided to visit friends, walk around campus, or for any other reason.
  • Do not order delivery of food. The University will provide groceries and meal deliveries. Drop off times will be communicated in advance.
  • Do not allow visitors.
  • Check-in each day through the Sara Alert survey that will monitor symptoms.
  • Monitor health daily, including taking temperature twice daily (morning and evening).
  • Call healthcare provider immediately if you become sick or your symptoms worsen and follow their advice. If you do not have a healthcare provider, you can call Health Services at 412-365-1714 or UPMC Urgent Care at 412-623-4114.
  • Students should provide updates to Chatham on whether you become symptomatic immediately. Call the professional staff on call phone: 412-670-6247.

Shelter-in-Place Guidelines

Residential students may be required to shelter in place for a variety of reasons, including campus change to high alert, fever, or as a precaution due to a positive case on residence hall floor. 

Shelter-in-Place directives will be sent by Residence Life and including, but not limited to the following: 

  • Stay in your housing assignment and do not go to class, work, or participate in any campus activities. Students will be connected with the Office of Academic & Accessibility Resources (OAAR) for faculty notifications and accommodations.
  • Limit movements in the residence hall and apartment building to only necessities (i.e. bathroom or laundry). Follow masking, physical distancing, and regularly clean and sanitize hands and spaces when visiting these spaces.
  • Do not visit other residents’ rooms or apartments.
  • Follow instructions for dining access which may include an assigned dining time or delivery.
  • Call your health care provider immediately if you become sick and follow their advice. If you do not have a health care provider, you can call Health Services at 412-365-1714 or UPMC Urgent Care at 412-623-4114.
  • Students should provide updates to Chatham on whether you become symptomatic immediately. Call the professional staff on call phone: 412-670-6247.

Resources Provided for Those in Isolation or Quarantine on Campus

  • Single room with access to personal or semi-private bathroom. Students must wear a mask, physically distance, and wipe down the bathroom when sharing with another person in isolation.
  • Self-isolation kit with basic toiletries (shampoo, soap, etc.) and basic cleaning supplies (trash bags, disinfectant wipes, etc.)
  • Regular food deliveries and groceries (when a kitchen is available)
  • Clothes and personal items, if needed.
  • Daily check-in. We will do our best to provide requested items, within reason.
  • Accommodations for classwork.
