Featuring University of Pittsburgh Gender Scholars:

Dr. Bridget Keown, Lecturer in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies
"Women and War Trauma, 1914-1923.”
The shell-shocked soldier is one of the most familiar of the First World War. But what happened to women who experienced trauma? Dr. Keown's research deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and experience of war trauma among British and Irish women during the First World War and the potential for care they found in the war’s aftermath. In addition to her scholarship on war-related trauma, Dr. Keown is developing GSWS's Gender and Science curriculum and researching the history of kinship among gay and lesbian groups during the AIDS outbreak in the US and Ireland.

Dr. Shaun Myers, Assistant Professor of English and affiliate faculty in the Center for African American Poetry and Poetics and GSWS
“Geographic Potency: Transnational Visions of Black Women Writing.”
This project tracks how black women writers such as June Jordan, Audre Lorde, Toni Cade Bambara, and Gloria Naylor generated what she terms geographic potency through acts of travel allowing them to somatically and imaginatively resituate themselves in the late Cold War world.
Dr. Myers is currently completing a book project,“Black Anaesthetics:African American Literature Beyond Man,” which traces post humanism’s disavowed genealogies in black literature of the post- civil rights era.
