Yemanja: Wisdom from the African Heart of Brazil

Narrated by Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Color Purple, who will be our special guest panelist at this Pittsburgh premiere!

Seating is first come, first served, with overflow seating in the Eddy Theater where the event will be simulcast. Registration does not guarantee a seat.

Yemanja: Wisdom from the African Heart of Brazil is a documentary film about the Candomblé spiritual tradition in Bahia, Brazil, a vibrant African-derived culture which evolved from slavery's brutal past. Elder women leaders tell stories of Candomblé's history, social challenges and triumphs, grounded in strong community, and Earth-based wisdom and practice.

    Our special guest panelists will be:
  • Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and narrator of film Yemanjá: Wisdom from the African Heart of Brazil.
  • Dr. Rachel Elizabeth Harding, University of Colorado, scholar of Indigenous spiritual traditions and Candomblé priestess.
  • Donna C. Roberts, producer, director and co-writer.

Directions

Please note: parking is extremely limited on Chatham’s campus.

We urge you to carpool, bike, walk, or take public transportation. In addition, we will be running shuttle buses from our East Side campus, at the corner of Fifth & Penn, starting at 5PM.

Please see the maps below for more information about local street parking, handicapped parking areas, and directions to the East Side lot. Parking by the Chapel, by Mellon, and at the Gatehouse will be handicapped only; a Chatham van will pick up guests in these areas. Please allow plenty of extra time for parking. Shuttle buses will run after the event until 10PM.

There is limited free parking in the Library Parking Lot which you can only enter off of Murray Hill Avenue (not to be confused with Murray Avenue).

Murray Hill Avenue can be reached from both Wilkins and Fifth Avenue and is a cobblestone street. From Fifth Ave, it is located between Maryland Ave and S. Negley Ave. From Wilkins, it is located between Murray Ave and S. Negley Ave.
