USW Withdaws Petition to Unionize Chatham’s Adjunct Faculty

PITTSBURGH: Chatham University was notified on June 16th, 2016 that the United Steelworkers Union has withdrawn its petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to unionize the University’s adjunct faculty.

The voting was scheduled to begin on June 17th, but as a result of this withdrawal, no election will be held, and the Union will not be able to file for a new election for at least six months.

“I want to thank Chatham’s faculty and staff for their professionalism, passion and calls for more dialogue among our community during this period,” said Esther Barazzone, Chatham University President. “We now have the opportunity to provide Chatham’s incoming President, David Finegold, the chance to listen, understand and move forward together as a community in making Chatham an even better place to work.”

The United Steelworkers Union submitted their petition for representation on May 25, 2016 with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). The withdrawal of their petition comes as Dr. David Finegold will join Chatham on July 1, 2016 as President following the retirement on June 30, 2016 of current President Dr. Esther Barazzone.
