Organized by the Pittsburgh Council on Higher Education, or PCHE, please join us for the third annual Pittsburgh Regional Faculty Symposium hosted by the Chatham University. The symposium is a day-long conference for faculty, teaching assistants, and faculty support specialists from colleges and universities in Pennsylvania and its adjacent states.

The symposium brings together current and aspiring educators with three goals in mind:

  1. To build regional faculty collaboration and community
  2. To showcase teaching practices that help students learn via posters and presentations
  3. To discover new practices to use in their own contexts

Supported by Colleagues in Connection (a regional professional development collaborative) the event hopes to build on the success of the inaugural symposium at Duquesne University in 2018 by inviting current and aspiring educators to spend a day together to share resources, insights, and information that will energize and spark learning in higher education.


2020 Theme

This year's theme is inspired by Dr. Derek Bruff's latest book, Intentional Tech: Principles to Guide the Use of Educational Technology in College Teaching. Proposal submissions should be:

  • Known to benefit students equitably
  • Achievable by instructors in varied contexts
  • Open to creativity
  • Based on principles of learning

Dr. Derek Bruff

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Derek Bruff is the Director of the Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching. His second book, Intentional Tech: Principles to Guide the Use of Educational Technology in College Teaching, will be published in 2019 by West Virginia University Press. This publication is a part of the WVU Press Teaching and Learning in Higher Education series edited by Dr. James Lang.

Bruff’s scholarly interests include educational technology, faculty development, and visual thinking. He writes about these topics on his blog, Agile Learning. Dr. Bruff has taught at Harvard University and has a PhD in mathematics from Vanderbilt University.

Session Types

We welcome proposals across four session types from all faculty, graduate students, librarians, instructional designers, and others involved in teaching and learning or educational development: Interactive Workshops, Lightning Rounds, Recipes for Success, and Posters. Sessions may be presented independently, in pairs, or small groups of 3 or 4. Proposals will be blind reviewed by colleagues from across the region.
