Chatham University Education

The Teacher Preparation Program offers teacher certification programs that include both classroom study and extensive field experiences, culminating in a minimum semester-long student teaching experience. Secondary content areas of Science, Mathematics, English, and Social Studies as well as art education (K-12), environmental education (K-12) are offered. A new program for early elementary, pre-K through 4th grade is currently under review by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The Liberal Arts Major in the new Early Elementary Education will experience a comprehensive preparation program for teaching young children predicated on a foundation in the liberal arts.

Students in secondary and K-12 certification areas must complete a major in the academic discipline: English, mathematics, history, physics, biology, chemistry, art, environmental science. Students also complete professional education coursework and field experiences, and candidates complete student teaching in grade levels representative of the candidate’s license.

In addition to Chatham University’s requirements for an academic degree, candidates seeking teacher licensure in Pennsylvania must also meet all requirements set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
