Nursing (RN-MSN) Overview

The RN to MSN Integrated Degree Educator Track allows the student to complete two graduate degrees in 44 credits. The BSN component prepares the registered nurse to improve person-centered care and leadership skills in the role of the generalist nurse. The MSN educator track provides the student with the graduate level knowledge and skills to become leaders and educators to nurses, nursing students, and other healthcare professionals as well as patients in clinical, academic, medical device sales, pharmaceutical sales, continuing education, and healthcare insurance settings. A total of 500 practice experience hours will be completed.

Cost consists of program tuition (cost per credit times number of credits) as well as any applicable University and degree-specific fees.

Explore the RN to MSN Degree:

By combining both degrees, nurses can earn their BSN and MSN at a lower cost and in less time. Instead of 59 credits required if taking the programs separately, nurses can complete both degrees with 44 credits by substituting BSN courses with MSN courses that meet the BSN program outcomes. A total of 500 practice experience hours will be obtained. Practice experiences are completed at approved practice experience sites. 

  1. Complete the free online application available at apply.chatham.edu
  2. Submit a copy of official transcripts of all completed post-high school education from all schools attended. Note a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
  3. Submit proof of completion of an RN degree.
  4. Submit a copy of a current unencumbered RN license in your state.
  5. Submit a current resume/curriculum vitae.
  6. Mail or email, in Word document formatting, an admission essay addressing the following prompt to GradAdmission@chatham.edu:
    • Describe the evolving role of the MSN prepared nurse in the practice setting.

NUR415: Contemporary Issues in Nursing  

This course will explore and analyze contemporary issues nurses experience in healthcare. Ethical, bioethical, and social issues will be highlighted. Students will develop skills related to self-care and resilience.

NUR410: Global, Cultural, and Diverse Populations

This course will explore the student’s understanding and role as a nurse leader in a global society while reflecting on personal and professional values and implicit biases. Ethical, equitable, person-centered, compassionate, and empathetic care opportunities will be examined.

NUR503: Informatics Foundation and Health Care Technology

This course focuses on technology and informatics in healthcare delivery. Students will evaluate current and emerging technologies used for data driven decision-making to support quality healthcare outcomes. Key to this foundational knowledge will be skills developed to effectively communicate, coordinate, and analyze change resulting from the utilization of technology.

NUR506: Communication and Collaboration for Leadership

This course will assist nurses to develop, analyze and apply skills in collaboration and communication, including the Interprofessional Education Collaborative's core competencies, effective communication strategies based on complexity and transformational leadership theory, skills of presentation and publication to improve patient care and advance nursing practice.

Funding Opportunities

The AfterCollege/AACN Scholarships support students who are seeking a baccalaureate, masters or doctoral degree in nursing. Eight $2,500 scholarships are awarded throughout the year. A limited number of nursing scholarships may be available. A FAFSA form must be completed and on file to be considered for the scholarship (school code: 003244).

Nurse Educator Certificate

The nurse educator certificate is a 12-credit certificate that provides the nurse with the basic educational tools necessary to teach nursing and/or nurses in an academic or clinical setting. The certificate can be completed in two terms. There is an optional 250 experiential practice hour practicum course for those students who want to apply their teaching knowledge and skills under the supervision of an educator preceptor for an additional three credits.
