Yona Harvey, writer and assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh, is one of two African-American women tapped to write for Marvel Comics for the first time ever. “Since Marvel’s founding in 1939, it appears that not a single black woman has penned a comic for [the company],” Ira Madison III wrote at MTV News. “That is insane.”
Black Panther: World of Wakanda will feature a 10-page backup story co-written by Harvey and Black Panther writer Ta-Nehisi Coates
Yona Harvey is the author of the poetry collection, Hemming the Water, winner of the Kate Tufts Discovery Award from Claremont Graduate University and finalist for the Hurston-Wright Award. Her work has been anthologized in many publications including The Force of What’s Possible: Accessibility and the Avant-Garde. She recently co-wrote with Ta-Nehisi Coates a Marvel comic for World of Wakanda, a companion to Coates’ best-selling Black Panther. She teaches in the University of Pittsburgh Writing Program
