Dr. Donna Naples Professor of Particle Physics, Physics and Astronomy Department, University of Pittsburgh

Underground Fundamental Physics via Identity Changing Neutrinos

Join Dr. Donna Naples for a discussion of recent progress in neutrino physics and exciting new research being conducted by the DUNE group (the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment).

Particle physics seek to understand the fundamental particles in our universe and their interactions with matter. Neutrinos are subatomic particles with tiny masses that come in three flavors and that rarely interact in matter. Dr. Naples will talk about recent progress in neutrino physics including the recent discovery of neutrino oscillation which employed enormous particle physics detectors located in deep underground mines. Another round of experiments which are using neutrino beams propagating hundreds of kilometers through the Earth's crust are now taking place and being planned which will also be discussed. The detectors are versatile enough to explore rare phenomena such as proton decay and supernova explosions.
