Education Overview

Chatham’s Education Department offers a major in PreK-4 education, and state-accredited certificates to teach Special Education, secondary English, social studies, mathematics, and biology (grades 7-12) and art (K-12), with an additional endorsement in Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Wellness.

Chatham faculty model inclusive pedagogy by understanding that you bring social and emotional complexities to our classrooms that inform your learning and future teaching practice. You can expect to get to know your faculty well and to be welcomed into a community that fosters your unique gifts and identities to grow into the teacher you want to be.

As a Chatham education graduate, you will stand out from other new teachers because you will deeply understand how a person’s multiple, intersecting identities and lived experiences inform their learning journey. You will be joining the education profession prepared to work well with all learners using a social justice and trauma-informed lens.

In Chatham’s Education program, we prepare our students to help all children succeed. We understand that each K12 student is an individual who needs to be understood by their teacher in order to thrive. By working with faculty with expertise in culturally responsive education, social-emotional and behavioral wellness, and special education, students learn how best to connect with and support K12 learners so that learners truly thrive.

What Education Students Are Saying

"The education I'm receiving at Chatham is going to prepare me for my time as a teacher. We do four tiers of field placements, and we start off our second semester of our first year in schools. So we get an early experience at a school, working with children and in that school environment."—Isabella Vincent, PreK-4 Education Major

Social, Emotional & Behavioral Wellness Program

The Social, Emotional & Behavioral Wellness (SEBW) program focuses on the social, emotional, and behavioral wellness of PK-12 students. Completely online, with the exception of a 70-hour practicum completed in an educational setting, the program aims to provide individuals working with youth with the tools and knowledge to create a nurturing, empathetic, supportive, and inclusive environment for students to support their overall development. The SEBW certificate program is open to students from all disciplines. Completion of this program qualifies education students or in-service educators to earn a state SEBW endorsement from the PA Department of Education.

Integrative Capstone in Education

In the Integrative Capstone in Education class, Education majors conduct their own action research project in their pre-student-teaching or student-teaching classrooms across the Pittsburgh area. They study a pressing problem in the field of Education, determine how best to address it in their own classroom, gather and analyze data on the changes they made, and assess how well their solution worked.  Education majors graduate from Chatham ready to continue this reflective practice throughout their teaching careers.

Our Mission

Chatham’s Education program partners with students, teachers, and the community in support of transformation for social justice. We challenge inequitable educational and other social systems that disenfranchise those with marginalized identities. We acknowledge that a person’s multiple, intersecting identities and lived experiences inform their learning journey. We are committed to equitable learning and living experiences for all.

Our Vision

The Education program at Chatham strives to create and be educators and community members who demonstrate care, compassion, and optimism. We understand that learning is a reciprocal, lifelong process informed by multiple intersecting identities and lived experiences. We listen to and tap into the wisdom of community partners. We advocate for people with marginalized social identities. We help youth understand the world they live in and challenge them to transform it. We work to form active citizens who create just and caring communities.
